BELMONT, NC... Belmont Abbey head men's golf coach Jim Haughey was named the 2007 NCAA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, and freshmen Conor Tomlinson and Joe Campbell were named honorable mention All-Americans by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Haughey, who stepped into the head men's position at mid-season, replacing long time coach Doug Ehmann, led the Crusaders to the Atlantic Region Championship in Pooler, Georgia, winning the tournament by 14 shots. That victory propelled the Abbey to its first NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance in school history, where they finished in a tie for sixth place.

In addition to the men's team, Haughey also led the Abbey women's golf program to the 2007 CVAC Championship. In just the program's second year of existence, the Abbey, playing with four freshmen and a sophomore, completed the tournament with a team score of 927, two shots better than Pfeiffer. The Abbey’s final round total of 293 is 11 shots better than the previous record of 308, set by Pfeiffer last year.

Tomlinson and Campbell earned honorable mention All-America honors after stellar performances throughout the year in their initial collegiate seasons.  Tomlinson finished 25th at the Atlantic Regional and then went on to a tie for 12th at the national tournament, posting a 70 in the final round, which included six birdies.

Campbell finished in a tie for fifth at the Regional, and went on to finish 14th at the national tournament, posting three 74s and a 75.

Doug Ehmann: 2006 CVAC Coach of the Year

BELMONT, N.C... Belmont Abbey men's head golf coach Doug Ehmann has announced his resignation, effective immediately, in order spend more time with his private business. He will be replaced by Jim Haughey, women's golf coach.
Haughey will continue as women's coach in addition to coaching the men's team.
"I have spent 18 wonderful years as the golf coach at Belmont Abbey," Ehmann said. "The program will be in great hands with Jim. The team is in the best condition it has ever been in, we have a solid program that is ranked as high as it has ever been, and I feel great about where the program is now. I look forward to supporting Jim and watching him take the program forward."
Ehmann, a 1985 graduate of BAC, coached the Crusaders from 1987-1996, then moved to UNC Charlotte as head coach from 1997-1998. He returned to his alma mater in 2000. Ehmann is also a member of the College's Board of Trustees.
"I am grateful to Doug for all that he has done for the men's golf program and for Belmont Abbey College," Athletics Director Eliane Kebbe said. "While he will no longer be our men's golf coach, I know he will continue to be a great supporter of Belmont Abbey College."
Ehmann guided the Crusaders to five conference titles, including three straight from 1994-96, and several post-season appearances at the NAIA and NCAA Division II levels. Belmont Abbey placed second in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference when he returned in 1999-2000.
"I am extremely honored to take over the men's program from Doug," Haughey said. "Doug is the heart and soul of this program and it is a privilege to be his successor. My goal is to build on what Doug accomplished and make the Abbey men's golf program a national contender."

Ehmann is CVAC Coach of Year,
Two Crusaders Earn All-Conference

HARTSVILLE, S.C. (Apr. 20, 2006) -- Belmont Abbey coach Doug Ehmann was named the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Men's Golf Coach of the Year during the league golf banquet at Hartsville Country Club.
Ehmann received the award for guiding the Crusaders to a successful 2005-06 campaign in which the team posted its all-time best tournament score and junior Kasey Timms fired the program's best round ever, a 66.
Ehmann's guidance was also important off the golf course as he held the team together through tragedy. Will Wilson, one of the team's best players and one of the most liked, died three weeks into the school year in an automobile accident.
Despite the loss of Wilson, along with two other key players, Ehmann kept the Crusaders competitive. They finished second in the CVAC Conference Championship and were ranked in the top 35 in the nation entering the league tournament.
Ehmann also won CVAC Coach of the Year honors during his first stint as Crusaders coach in 1996.
"It's a nice honor, but I am more pleased that our team, faced with adversity, played well all year," said Ehmann. "The guys worked hard and played with a purpose -- to honor the memory of Will."
Ehmann wasn't the only Crusader to be honored at the banquet. Junior Kasey Timms of Janetville, Ontario, Canada, was named first-team All-Conference and senior Kent Cherry of Gastonia earned second-team All-Conference honors.
Timms posted a stroke average of 74.40 and won the Richard Rendleman Invitational in addition to shooting the school-record 66. Cherry posted a stroke average of 75.56 with a low round of 68.
"Kasey has been strong all year and it was a well-deserved honor," said Ehmann. "Kent is a four-year letterman who has contributed so much to the program, so it was a nice way to end his senior season."
